Channel Frederator RAW

Hey! TempleDog here, starting up the official MONSTERJAM discussion, to keep everyone on RAW posted about the progress of the event.

First off, thanks to Eric Homan for getting the trailer for the jam into episode 125. I've been getting major pimpage from Fred, MyToons, Cold Hard Flash, Drawn!...really appreciate all the support!

But now we need filmmakers! The idea here is similar to the Fred '2 second club' films (love the Valentine's edition) and Fred Ex. Anybody who wants to join the jam, create a 10 second long animated film (any technique) featuring monsters. We'll edit all the films together and make it the showpiece of the TAIS Animation Showcase 2008! The Showcase first screens at the National Film Board cinema here in Toronto, and then Madi Piller, TAIS head honcho, will be showing it at special screenings around Canada and beyond during the year.

In keeping with the theme, I've managed to rustle up some prizes! Monster Factory (www.monsterfactory.net) is a small company here in Toronto that makes custom-made monster stuffies! These guys made us a bunch of mascot stuffies for two christmas promos we did at my dayjob, and they do fantastic work...just check 'em out below!

I also managed to snag a copy of Jellaby by Kean Soo (http://www.keaner.net) and Amulet vol. 1 by Kazu Kibuishi (http://www.boltcity.com). Both of the authors were at The Beguiling (www.beguiling.com) for a signing session, and they hooked me up with 'MONSTERJAM 2008' sigs and sketches! Both of 'em came out to sign books in one of the worst storms of the season, so huge thanks!

May be getting some more prizing closer to the event deadline...I'll keep you all posted as to goings on, as well as featuring animators who've submitted films.

So if anyone has questions, ideas for their film, technical issues, wants to get feedback from fellow FRED heads on character designs, etc., post here! And feel free to send me a private message anytime. Go monsters!

O.k., long time no speaky. Sorry for the long absence, but we've been crazy busy at TAIS. Getting a lot of great MONSTERJAM entries, the latest from Israel, no less! Just discovered that if you've got an animation file to send, WinRAR (www.win-rar.com/) is the compression tool of choice. Animation student Alon Gaash just sent me his most excellent entry, and at 98 megs, I was a lil' worried that the e-mail client would choke, but it came through just fine! Just remember: 720 x 480, Quicktime, 10 seconds, with monsters. Deadline is fast approaching (May 30th) and we've got a long weekend comin' up, so nows the time, people! Looking forward to seeing them films.

The MONSTERJAM entry date has come and gone, and I've gotta say the response...phenomenal! All told, we've got over seven minutes of monster footage...you heard right, seven minutes. Entries from Canada, the US, Israel, Spain, Iran, Brazil...this is going to be one awesome jam film! Madi is in the process of going through the individual films right now in advance of the edit for the Animation Showcase show. We'll be meeting next week to discuss how to edit the jam film for the show...I'll keep y'all posted!

Quick update: TAIS editor Felix is stitching together the MONSTERJAM as I write this...it's going to screen as the opener to the 2nd half of TAIS' Animation Showcase on Friday, June 27th. We'll have a special jury on hand to award prizes for the Best Monster Film, a runner-up prize and an Audience Choice award. I'll be profiling the winners on the TAIS blog in July. If you are in Toronto next week, be sure to take in the show!
