Hey, My name is Mark and I am an animation student at Syracuse University and at this point it is clear to me that Syracuse is not the school for me (in many ways) and I was wondering where you all were going to school, how you like it, if you wished you were somewhere else, or if you are self taught. I would really appreciate any information about where I can persue animation. -Thank you-

Hey Mark!

well... I'm currently going to Art Institute of California - San Francisco to be an animator. At times I feel that this school is not for me, but then at times I feel it is... it's really weird, I just finished up with my first year of the three year program, and we just started animating in Maya. At times I wish I would have went to the Academy of Art instead, to me it feels like they are more passionate about animation then AiCA-SF but anyways... yeah! i really hope that help... feel free to ask any questions!

I'm at the IADT- The internation academy of design and technology in downtown Toronto. It's cool, I just started a week ago. I'm enrolled in Traditional Arts and animation, so I'll be working on some of the oldschool stuff- you know- Disney and WB and all that. It's great, one of my teachers worked on All Dogs go to Heaven and Beauty and the Beast, and I admit that's mighty impressive.

Wish ya the best of luck in your schooling bud. ;D

Hi, I´m attending the University of Applied Sciences of Wiesbaden/ Germany studying something that could be translated as Communication Design. The purpose of studying this is to end up in advertising agencies, to be some sort of an art or creative- director and thus the structure of the classes intend to give you some insights of practically designing in all kinds of media- a bit of everything but nothing too deeply explored.
However, the variety of classes to choose is quite good though and I´m going to major in 2D-Animation. Sometimes feeling unhappy I would rather have changed the school (e.g. to Potsdam-Babelsberg nearby Berlin or the Academy of Film Ludwigsburg nearby Stuttgart), to be educated in 2D-animation and filmmaking more specifically, but on the other hand I feel that it is very inspiring to have some more fertile influences than only film and animation. Probably just I found a way to turn into strengthes, what I felt to be weaknesses in the beginning.

Sorry, haven´t been able to practise my English in the last years. I hope it did´t turn out to be too confusing...

I'm currently studying Multi-media at GLU in the Netherlands. It is a very wide spread school. from 3D to design, from concept to print and from animation to film. Though I'm very anctious to enroll In a school where I can realy concentrate on animating. 2D animation that is. So i'm thinking of going to the Vancouver Film School. Does anyone go to school there or know anything about it? plz feel free to share it with me/us. tanx!

Hey don't know where your at but I'm actually attending the Academy of Art University via their online program. Their are perks and their are drawbacks to doing this stuff online. Obviously the perks are doing it at home and not having to relocate, i personally wasn't a big city person and couldn't afford to live in San Fran hence chose to do it online. Their on limitations in the way the classes are run, it is extremely difficult if not impossible to get timely feedback on what your doing and your often animating blind. Some people learn well this way i happen to be one of them, i learn well from my mistakes and what not, but i do wish at times i could ask questions and get an instant response. The other drawback is you have to buy the equipment on your own, their are no labs to go to, or drawing rooms to go to. This can be both good and bad, sweet in the fact i have alot of the top of the line software and equipment used for animating, but sucky because i have an empty wallet. One good thing i like about the school is they teach you art background like figure drawing and color theory which i've now come to realize is essential in being a good animator, but i think in hindsight i wish i would have maybe attended AnimationMentor. Hope this helps.

I am currently enrolled at the Kansas City Art Institute and I love it. The freshman year here is a foundations year in which the students are taught everything from painting to sculpture to digital arts and then at the end of the year the students decide what major they want to go into. I decided animation and here I am. The program here is pretty much brand new, its in its 4th year, but I find that to be a perk because I get to help shape my own education. Everything is taught here from hand drawn to sand to 3-d Maya animation. There really are no limits as the department director, Doug Hudson, is himself an experimental animator and will allow each student to pursue any stream of animation they desire. This place has been such a great learning environment for me, and i would suggest it for anyone who wanted to partake in an animation education.

As of september i will be going to Bristol Univerity of The West of England. I may have joined this group a little early as i have not started the course yet, but i did study animation for my foundation art so i guess i am an animation student. What cool people have you had lecturing at your university?

Hi Mark,
I am currently enrolled in the New England Institute of Art in Brookline, Massachusetts. I am there for a program called Media Arts & Animation. The program teaches us how to encompass our talents mostly into animation. I have currently just been doing things in flash and adobe photoshop for schoolwork. Next semester I am going to be starting to do 3d modeling. Its sort of a build up course at my school. first they taught us how to animate using the old fashioned way with the stop motion camera. and then we moved onto flash...a higher flash class and then onto 3d modeling. I see that we have had alot of animation classes, but we have probably had maybe 2 that would be classified under " Media Arts".
The only tiff with my school is that its a small school. Most of the kids that go to this school commute (including myself), and good luck finding parking most of the time. We currently dont have our own dorms and we share dorms with another college ( Regis college). However at sometimes I feel that some kids in my class arent really up to the challenge of having a wide array of work. Theres kids in my class that just do anime...excuse me.. live, breathe, copy, mimic, eat, draw and sleep anime. But thats another story because I am starting to not stand anime anymore. Another thing that kinda stinks at my school is that we do not have a student voice. Ironically creative mind set may be allowed but with certain permissions from the higher ups. Other than that..thats all that i can think of for now.
