Viacom Wants To Steal My Film
I just got a notification from YouTube.com that Viacom has made a copyright ownership claim to my film Juxtaposer.
It is so absurd that it frightens me. I got my film's copyright secured in October 2006, and I only entered into distribution agreements that were nonexclusive. I can't fathom under what pretense Viacom has made this claim. There's no money in it for them. The dollars I've made from Juxtaposer can be counted on my fingers. Maybe they just really liked it. Maybe they want to make my life just a little bit more miserable. Or maybe this is their way of gloating over their recent court victory against Google.
Anyhow, I've disputed their claim and I have the documents to back it up. I'm just a scared that my little film will be lost in the shadow of the hulking monolith called Viacom.

Number one, Juxtaposer...awesome film. Number two...Viacom. Hey, ya got the docs, and you've got Fred hisself in your corner; don't be 'fraid, be flattered. Number three: Hey, Viacom, why don'tcha lay claim to one of mine, neh? I could use the publicities!

Joanna, This same thing has happened to a number of filmmakers, including yours truly. I'm in business with Viacom on a number of shows they indeed own, but they made a claim on our series Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, which runs on Nick Jr. but they have no ownership in whatsoever. Arggggg.
If I can be any help, if this situation doesn't resolve itself soon, please let me know. We're connected right to the bureaucrat who's causing the problems, so we should be able to cut to the chase.
For whatever it's worth, I wish I could get all worked up about them annoying all of us. Truth is I don't think it's anything other than corporate incompetence and ignorance. It doesn't make it any better, but that's my take. Truth is, we're all in the pioneering days of a new medium and we all get bounced around a bit.

- I hope you're right. Although even if I get my rights back in two weeks I can't help but resent Viacom for this needless aggravation. Why the hell are they picking on us anyway?
