Procrastination

I've been meaning to start this forum for some time. As you can see, however, I'm a procrastinator. It seems to me that many in the artistic community suffer from procrastination and I want to know how you deal with it, what has worked, what hasn't, and why you believe we put our lives and work on hold so often.

To answer your first question, yes, I'm dodging work while posting this.

Maybe we can help each other through this horrible [self]infliction.

For me, the number one thing is to start. Just start. Whatever the task, break it down and do just a little bit. So, if I have an involved video short that I would like to do, I'll pick one aspect of the production and decide to work on it for ten minutes. I'll tell myself "just ten minutes tonight." And, what usually happens, is once I have started I'll just keep going. Once I'm into it, and feel the reason I picked this endeavor in the first place (cuz I just love making this crap) I'll continue. Tell yourself "I'll just do ten minutes."

A friend in college once told me that procrastination is like masturbation. It feels great while you're doing it, but in the end, you're only f@#king yourself.

Too true.

I tried the "just ten minutes" approach and I ended up working for an hour and getting a full project's thumbnails finished and completed a character design... for once, I feel that I'm not farking myself. Now I'm sleepy, though, so I've set aside six hours in which to work tomorrow.

I subscribe to the theory that "The best work is that which is done at the last minute." :D

... and yes, I'm currently cramming to complete some work, and yet allowing RAW to distract me. Go figure.

I subscribe to the Calvin and Hobbes school of Last Minute Panic.

Good question Denny! As I also suffer from the same, severe procastinatory infirmity. I spoke to my local employer in which he prescribed an FDA (Federally Dedicated Approach) approved method to overcome this suffering. "Ded-lyns" is a safe an effect way to cure this illness. It isn't available over the counter and may cause drowsiness, stress and aggravation. "Ded-lyns" should be used on a regular basis for the duraction of "im-ploi-mint". Failing to follow these instructions have had many consequences. Studies have shown that in 85% of all cases, incorrectly following the schedule causes a state-of-being known by "un-imploi-mint". Contact your local employer for more information on "Ded-lyns" and if you qualify as an "im-ploi-e".
